Government structure: Unitary Republic with Sovereignty vested in the people

As designated by the 1945 Constitution the following organs of the State exist:

Executive: The president and vice president are elected for a term of five years as head of state and government by the people though their representatives in the peoples consultative assembly (MPR). The president can serve a maximum of two consecutive terms.
                                    
Legislative: 500 members make up the house of representatives (DPR), with 700 members in the MPR.

Judicial: The Supreme court, is an independent judiciary and the highest appellate body. General elections are held every five years to elect members to the DPR AND MPR, at the national, regional and district levels. The MPR is Indonesia's highest authority to which the president is responsible.
